Lorry Driver Jailed for Death of Woman Struck by Loose Crane Equipment in Cambridgeshire

A lorry driver has been sentenced to 13 months in jail after loose crane equipment from his vehicle struck and fatally injured a woman pushing a pram in Cambridgeshire in 2022.

The incident occurred on 22 September 2022 in the village of Willingham.

Rebecca Ableman, 30, was walking with her two-year-old daughter along a pavement by the B1050 when she was hit from behind by a crane unit that had become unsecured on the lorry.

She suffered catastrophic brain injuries and died three weeks later.

Kevin Miller, 71, from King's Lynn, Norfolk, admitted causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving.

He had initially denied causing death by dangerous driving but later changed his plea during legal proceedings at Peterborough Crown Court.

The court heard that securing the crane unit would have taken only moments, and Miller became aware that the equipment had moved only after leaving Willingham.

He claimed he was unaware of the incident until questioned by police.

Ableman's family described her as a hero, noting her final act was pushing her daughter away from harm.
