Péter Magyar meets Hungarian president after landslide election victory

Péter Magyar, who ended Viktor Orbán's 16-year rule, met Hungary's president seeking a swift transfer of power following his party's landslide win.

Magyar's Tisza party secured a two-thirds super-majority in parliament in the recent election.

President Tamás Sulyok, who has so far refused Magyar's demand to step down, is widely expected to nominate Magyar as the next prime minister.

Magyar aims to be in office by about 5 May.

Magyar appeared on public radio and television for the first time in 18 months, during which he announced plans to suspend current news coverage on state media, which he condemned as propaganda.

He intends to form a new broadcast authority to ensure press freedom.

This political transition marks a significant shift in Hungary's governance after years of Orbán's administration, which was criticised by the European Parliament as an "electoral autocracy." Magyar has accused the previous government of corruption, cronyism, and misappropriation of EU funds.

Magyar broke from Orbán's party in March 2024 and built broad public support for the Tisza party over two years.

His demand for a rapid transfer of power underscores his urgency to overturn policies he associates with Orbán's rule.
