Texas lawmaker Tony Gonzales resigns after affair admission

Tony Gonzales resigned from the US House of Representatives on Tuesday following his admission of an affair with a staff member who later died by self-immolation.

The resignation came amid mounting pressure and an ongoing ethics investigation.

Gonzales, a Republican representing Texas's 23rd congressional district, confirmed the relationship with Regina Santos-Aviles, a married staff member who died by suicide in September 2025 near her home in Uvalde, Texas.

The medical examiner ruled her death a suicide.

The resignation follows sexual misconduct allegations against another congressman, Democrat Eric Swalwell of California, which prompted ethics inquiries and discussions about expelling both lawmakers.

To avoid expulsion and retain pension benefits, Gonzales and Swalwell submitted their resignations effective Tuesday.

Gonzales had initially denied any wrongdoing, calling the allegations "blackmail" and a "co-ordinated" attack.

He had announced last month that he would not seek re-election but faced increased pressure to leave Congress sooner as details emerged.

Swalwell resigned on Monday after dropping out of the California governor race, denying all misconduct claims.
