14-year-old kills nine in Turkey school shooting

A 14-year-old student in Kahramanmaras, Turkey, shot dead eight classmates and a teacher in a personal attack using his father's guns, marking the second school shooting in Turkey in two days.

The attacker, an eighth-grade pupil, entered two classrooms carrying five weapons and seven magazines believed to belong to his father, a former police officer.

He opened fire randomly before dying at the scene, reportedly by shooting himself.

Nine people were killed, including eight students and one teacher.

Thirteen others were wounded, with six in critical condition, according to Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci.

The attack caused panic among students, some of whom fled by jumping from first-floor windows and running through the school courtyard.

Police and emergency services quickly secured the area.

Kahramanmaras province governor Mukerrem Unluer confirmed the shooter was the son of Ugur Mersinli, a former police officer who has been detained by authorities.

Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the attack and the source of the weapons.

Justice Minister Akin Gurlek announced that prosecutors have launched an immediate investigation into the shooting.

This incident follows a similar attack on April 14, when an 18-year-old former student opened fire at his former high school in Sanliurfa province, injuring 16 people before killing himself.

That shooting also involved students and teachers among the casualties, highlighting a concerning pattern of school violence in Turkey.
