Man admits storing mother's body in chest freezer at home in Wales

Christopher Phillips has admitted preventing the lawful and decent burial of his mother, Sylvia Phillips, after her body was found in a chest freezer at her home in Porthcawl, Wales.

The 89-year-old woman's body was discovered by South Wales Police officers in February 2026 following a welfare check requested by her GP.

Cardiff Crown Court heard that Sylvia Phillips died sometime in 2023, though the exact cause of death remains unknown as investigations continue.

Alongside the charge of preventing lawful burial, Christopher Phillips, aged 60, also admitted two counts of fraud for failing to notify the Department for Work and Pensions and Bridgend council of his mother's death.

The discovery of the body and the subsequent court admission have raised serious concerns about the circumstances surrounding Sylvia Phillips's death and the handling of her affairs.

Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke described the offences as extremely serious during the hearing.

The case highlights issues related to the welfare of elderly individuals and the importance of timely reporting and investigation of deaths.

The ongoing investigation into the cause of death underscores the need for clarity in such cases.

Christopher Phillips is scheduled to be sentenced on 2 June 2026.
