Former Virginia Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax kills wife and himself

Justin Fairfax, the former lieutenant governor of Virginia, shot and killed his wife Cerina Fairfax before taking his own life early on April 16, 2026.
The incident occurred at their residence in Annandale, Virginia, shortly after midnight.
Police responded after receiving a 911 call from one of their teenage children who were present at the home.
Fairfax, 47, was involved in a complicated and ongoing domestic dispute related to a divorce.
Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis stated that the shooting was connected to recent legal proceedings, with Fairfax having been served paperwork related to an upcoming court case.
The couple's two teenage children were in the house at the time of the incident.
Authorities confirmed that the former lieutenant governor shot his wife before turning the gun on himself.
Police had previously been called to the residence in January 2026 after Fairfax accused his wife of assault, but the claim was disproven after reviewing footage from cameras inside the home.
Justin Fairfax served as Virginia's lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022 under Governor Ralph Northam.
