Sudanese band Aswat Almadina continues music amid war and displacement

Members of Sudan's influential band Aswat Almadina have fled the country due to the ongoing conflict but continue to produce music inspired by their home city, Khartoum, aiming to inspire peace.
Timon, a founding member of Aswat Almadina, left Sudan two months after the conflict began in 2023, deeply affected by the violence and destruction he witnessed in Khartoum.
The war has caused over 150,000 deaths and displaced around 12 million people, creating what the United Nations describes as the world's largest humanitarian crisis.
Despite their dispersion across the world, the band members hold onto hope that their music will serve as a beacon for peace in a nation ravaged by war.
Aswat Almadina, meaning "Sounds of the City," was founded in 2014 and blends Middle Eastern folk influences with urban pop and vibrant jazz, reflecting the atmosphere and sounds of Khartoum.
The band quickly gained a devoted following, especially among Sudanese youth, and became the first Sudanese band to tour the country.
Their lyrics address social justice, corruption, and the everyday struggles of young people, earning them recognition as UNDP Goodwill Ambassadors in 2017.
Co-founder and lead vocalist Ibrahem Mahmoud recalls a fan holding a sign during a performance that read, "Your music saved my life," highlighting the band's significant cultural impact.
Before the 2019 uprising that ousted longtime leader Omar al-Bashir, Mahmoud was repeatedly arrested for songs critical of the political system, underscoring the band's intertwining of music and activism.
The ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis have deeply affected Sudan's cultural landscape, making the band's continued creative efforts particularly meaningful.
Their music, described as a blend of Middle Eastern folk, urban pop, and jazz, draws from the natural sounds of Khartoum and the experiences of its people.
It remains unclear how the band will operate moving forward amid the prolonged conflict and diaspora, but their commitment to peace through music endures.
