Attempted arson attack at north-west London synagogue amid rising antisemitic incidents

An attempted arson attack occurred at Kenton United Synagogue in Harrow, north-west London, causing minor smoke damage but no injuries.

The incident took place overnight on Saturday and is part of a series of similar attacks targeting Jewish sites in the area.

The Community Security Trust (CST), which monitors antisemitism and supports Jewish communities, confirmed the damage was limited to an internal room with no significant structural harm.

The synagogue is located near a school and children's playground.

Police responded promptly, establishing a large cordon and deploying forensic teams, fire investigation dogs, and plainclothes officers.

Several police vehicles, including marked and unmarked cars, were present at the scene.

This attack follows recent arson attempts on Jewish community sites in Finchley, Golders Green, and Hendon.

The Metropolitan Police have increased patrols in north-west London and are treating these incidents as antisemitic hate crimes.

The CST expressed gratitude to the police and fire brigade for their swift response and stated they are working closely with authorities to identify those responsible.

They also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan highlighted the increased police presence and condemned antisemitism, emphasizing that perpetrators will face legal consequences.

Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis described the attacks as part of a "sustained campaign of violence and intimidation" against the Jewish community.
