UK Prime Minister Starmer faces Commons over Lord Mandelson vetting scandal

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer appeared before the UK Parliament to address questions regarding the vetting process of Lord Mandelson's appointment as the United Kingdom's ambassador to the United States.

Starmer stated that he was unaware of any red flags until last week, despite the warnings being raised in January 2025.

The Prime Minister confirmed that civil servants in the Foreign Office had withheld information about concerns flagged during the initial vetting process.

He said the first he knew of these issues was when Dame Antonia Romeo, head of the civil service, and Cat Little, head of the Cabinet Office, informed him two weeks ago.

The scandal has caused significant political disruption, with opposition leaders calling for Starmer's resignation.

Starmer pledged "true transparency" as he sought to clarify the circumstances surrounding the vetting process.

This matter is particularly significant given Lord Mandelson's high-profile appointment as ambassador in December 2024, replacing the previous civil servant ambassador.

Mandelson's political appointment carried greater risks, and critics argue that the vetting process should have been more rigorous.

Warnings about Mandelson's suitability were initially raised by UK Security and Vetting officials in January 2025 but were not disclosed to the Prime Minister or his team until recently.

The documents came to light after a parliamentary motion demanded the publication of all vetting-related paperwork.

Starmer maintained that neither he nor his former chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, who resigned in February over the scandal, were aware of the vetting concerns.

However, opposition MPs have expressed skepticism about the claim that the Prime Minister and his staff remained uninformed for over a year.
