EU Summit in Cyprus to Address Fragile Middle East Ceasefires and Regional Cooperation

An EU summit is scheduled to take place in Cyprus on April 23-24, bringing together EU member states and Middle Eastern leaders to discuss ongoing fragile ceasefires in Lebanon and Iran.
The two-day meeting will also include the secretary general of the Gulf Cooperation Council and a video address from Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelensky.
Leaders from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria have been invited to participate in the summit, which aims to provide political guidance on regional security issues.
Lebanon's prime minister, Nawaf Salam, is expected to attend in person.
The summit will focus on efforts to de-escalate tensions, protect freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, and assess the economic impact on Europe of the US-led conflict involving Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed at the time of the summit.
Cyprus' deputy minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, emphasized the importance of regional security, stating that it is closely linked to the security of the European Union itself.
The meeting is not expected to produce formal conclusions but will address recent developments and promote regional cooperation.
Ahead of the summit, EU foreign ministers met in Luxembourg on April 21 to discuss Ukraine, the Middle East, and potential trade sanctions with Israel.
