86-Year-Old Woman Convicted Over Typo on Car Insurance Form in UK

An 86-year-old woman from York, United Kingdom, was convicted after mistakenly entering one letter incorrectly on her car insurance form.

The error rendered her insurance invalid, leading to a criminal prosecution.

The woman had applied for a year's insurance coverage for her Suzuki Splash with an incorrect letter in the vehicle registration number, substituting an 'F' for an 'S'.

This mistake was not noticed until she received a letter from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) informing her of prosecution for driving without insurance.

She was sentenced to a three-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay a £26 victim surcharge.

Despite letters from the woman and her niece explaining the unintentional error and the family's support, the conviction was issued through the Single Justice Procedure, a fast-track court process.

This case highlights concerns about the fairness of the Single Justice Procedure, which allows magistrates to convict defendants in private hearings based solely on written evidence, without a prosecutor present to review new mitigating information.

The DVLA has stated it will contact the woman to verify her insurance paperwork and may seek to have the conviction overturned if the typo is confirmed as the cause.

The incident occurred after the woman's car was deemed uninsured on 6 February 2026.
