Fines totaling €434,000 imposed on M50 toll evaders in Ireland

Eighteen motorists were fined a total of €434,000 for evading toll payments on the M50 motorway following prosecution no-shows at Dublin District Court on April 20, 2026.

Among those fined was a driver with 1,087 unpaid toll trips, the highest number recorded in the case.

Judge Anthony Halpin presided over the case and emphasized the importance of road infrastructure in Ireland.

He condemned recent protests that blocked roads, describing the disruption as causing significant hardship for ordinary people.

Most defendants failed to attend the court proceedings, leading to fines being imposed in their absence.

Sixteen motorists received the maximum fine of €25,000.

One commercial vehicle owner was also fined the maximum amount for 79 unpaid journeys on the motorway.

The only defendant to attend was a 65-year-old woman who had paid for 281 of her 460 trips.

Her defence counsel cited mitigating circumstances, including her need to care for elderly parents.

The judge ordered her to remain in the courtroom until her release later that day under a provision allowing detention in court precincts instead of imprisonment.

In addition to fines, no-show defendants were ordered to pay €350 in costs within three months.

Prosecuting counsel Thomas Rice confirmed that each defendant faced five sample counts for journeys mainly between April and September 2025.
