Police Gunfight Traps 200 Tourists on Rio de Janeiro Favela Hilltop

Around 200 tourists were trapped on the hilltop of Morro Dois Irmãos in Rio de Janeiro during a police operation in the Vidigal favela.

Officers from the Public Prosecutor's Office of Bahia and Rio's Polícia Civil were seeking to arrest alleged members of the Comando Vermelho gang believed to be hiding in the area.

The main access trail to the hilltop, a popular spot for views over Ipanema Beach, was blocked as police and suspected gang members exchanged gunfire.

Tourists were instructed by guides to sit down and remain calm while the shooting continued nearby.

The group remained stranded for about 30 minutes before being allowed to descend safely.

Eyewitnesses reported that police helicopters flew overhead during the operation, and guides had been informed about the police activity beforehand.

Local guides coordinated with police units to manage the situation and reassure visitors.

This incident highlights ongoing security challenges in Rio's favelas, where criminal groups like Comando Vermelho maintain control and influence over local services and territories.

The presence of tourists in these areas during police operations raises concerns about public safety and the impact on tourism.
