A shooting occurred on April 20, 2026, at the Pyramid of the Moon in Teotihuacan, Mexico, resulting in two deaths and multiple injuries.

The gunman, identified as Julio César Jasso Ramírez, opened fire at around 11:30 am atop the Pyramid of the Moon, the second largest pyramid at the site, before killing himself.

Authorities confirmed that a Canadian woman was among those killed, along with the shooter.

Thirteen people were injured, seven of whom sustained gunshot wounds.

The injured include children aged six and 13 from Colombia and Brazil, as well as tourists from Colombia, Canada, Russia, the United States, and Brazil.

The incident caused disruption at one of Mexico's most visited pre-Hispanic sites, located about 30 miles northeast of Mexico City.

Authorities evacuated the site and recovered a firearm, a knife, and multiple rounds of ammunition at the scene.

Some tourists were briefly held hostage during the shooting before being released by the gunman.

The shooting occurred less than two months before the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada, highlighting concerns about security at major tourist destinations.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called for a thorough investigation and sent personnel to provide assistance at the site.
