Investigation launched into deaths of US officials in Mexico car crash

Two US officials died alongside two Mexican officials in a car crash in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua.

The accident occurred as they were returning from a counter-narcotics operation targeting illegal drug labs.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has ordered an investigation into the involvement of the US personnel in the operation.

The officials were travelling in a vehicle that skidded off the road and fell into a ravine, where it exploded.

The US nationals were described as "instructor officers" from the US embassy engaged in training activities with Mexican authorities.

The Mexican officials who died were members of the Chihuahua State Investigation Agency.

President Sheinbaum stated that neither she nor senior federal security officials had been informed about any joint operations involving US personnel in Chihuahua.

She emphasized that foreign officials must have prior federal clearance to operate on Mexican soil.

The investigation aims to clarify the circumstances of the operation and assess any legal implications.
