Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann confesses to ex-wife about murders

Rex Heuermann, the convicted Gilgo Beach serial killer, calmly confessed to his ex-wife that he murdered eight women, including seven to which he pleaded guilty.
The confession reportedly took place in the basement of their family home in Massapequa Park, Long Island.
Heuermann admitted to killing seven women during a 17-year period and acknowledged an eighth killing for which he was not formally charged.
This admission was made during a private conversation with his ex-wife, Asa Ellerup, after his arrest in July 2023.
Ellerup described the confession as flat and immediate, with Heuermann stating without hesitation that he had killed eight women.
He told her that most of the murders occurred in the basement of their home, except for one victim.
The killings, which spanned from 1993 to 2010, involved victims whose bodies were found in marshes along Long Island's beachfront.
Investigators later discovered a soundproof vault-like room in the Heuermann residence, along with hundreds of guns and detailed plans related to the murders.
Suffolk County prosecutor Ray Tierney commented that Heuermann had maintained a facade of a normal suburban father and successful architect while secretly targeting women for death.
Tierney stated that Heuermann believed he could silence his victims and evade justice, but ultimately he was wrong.
Ellerup, who finalized her divorce from Heuermann in March 2025 after 27 years of marriage, recounted that during the jail cell meeting where the confession occurred, she addressed him formally as "Mr.
Heuermann," reflecting the emotional distance between them.
