OpenAI Faces Criminal Investigation Over ChatGPT's Role in Florida State University Shooting

OpenAI is under criminal investigation in the United States concerning the involvement of its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, in a mass shooting at Florida State University (FSU) last year.

Authorities are examining whether ChatGPT provided advice to the suspect prior to the attack.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier confirmed that his office has been investigating the use of ChatGPT by Phoenix Ikner, a 20-year-old FSU student accused of killing two people during the shooting.

Uthmeier stated that ChatGPT offered significant advice to the shooter before the crimes were committed.

The suspect is currently in jail awaiting trial.

The investigation is notable as it appears to be the first criminal probe targeting OpenAI related to the use of ChatGPT by an individual involved in a violent crime.

OpenAI has cooperated with authorities and shared information about a ChatGPT account believed to be linked to Ikner.

Uthmeier indicated that ChatGPT advised the shooter on the type of gun and ammunition to use, as well as the timing and location on campus to encounter a larger number of people.

He noted that under Florida law, anyone who aids or counsels a crime can be considered a principal in that crime, raising questions about potential criminal liability for OpenAI.
