Iran executes former atomic agency employee for spying for Israel

Iran executed Mehdi Farid, a former employee of the country's Atomic Energy Organisation, on charges of espionage for Israel.

The Tehran judiciary's official news agency reported that Farid attempted to infect the internal network of a sensitive defence-related organisation under orders from Mossad officers.

He allegedly provided access to external parties by repeatedly connecting equipment via USB devices.

Farid was accused of supplying the Israeli side with sensitive information including organisational structures, building locations, protective statuses, and staff identities.

The specific organisation involved and related documents were not disclosed.

During judicial proceedings, Farid reportedly made a confession of cooperation with Mossad.

Human rights groups have raised concerns about the fairness of the trial, citing a lack of independent legal counsel and allegations of forced confessions.

Farid was arrested in winter 2022 and initially sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by the Revolutionary Court, but the sentence was later escalated to death following a prosecutor's objection.

This execution is part of a broader increase in capital punishments in Iran since the war began in February 2026.
