UK under-16s debate social media ban amid mental health concerns

A group of UK youths aged 12 to 18 recently debated the potential ban of social media for under-16s, highlighting concerns about exposure to harmful content.

The debate took place at the Bolton Lads & Girls Club, where 33 pupils from the north-west of England shared their views on social media restrictions.

Among the participants was 13-year-old Isaac, who reported watching up to four hours of TikTok daily, enjoying football clips, superheroes, and gaming content.

Despite his enjoyment, he acknowledged encountering videos that made him feel sad, angry, or worried.

Another participant, 14-year-old Iga, expressed concern about seeing videos discussing suicidal thoughts and serious mental health issues.

She worried that younger children might imitate harmful language and behaviour seen online, potentially causing self-harm.

Earlier on the same day, MPs in Westminster voted to reject a social media ban for under-16s for the third time.

The UK government is conducting a public consultation aimed at better protecting children from harmful online content, including violence, misogyny, suicide, and eating disorders.

Education Minister Olivia Bailey stated that the government is committed to action but is considering how best to proceed.

She noted that the consultation covers broader measures than the rejected amendments that would have restricted social media access for under-16s.

Shadow Education Secretary Laura Trott criticised the delay in implementing protections, emphasising the need to shield children from extreme and violent content.

The government also recently committed to a statutory ban on phones in schools.
