Veteran Australian radio host James Valentine dies at 64

James Valentine, a veteran talkback radio host on Australia's national broadcaster, has died at the age of 64.

He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family after choosing voluntary assisted dying following a cancer diagnosis.

Valentine was best known as the host of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Afternoons radio programme in Sydney, a role he held for more than 20 years.

He was also an accomplished musician, playing saxophone in several bands including The Models.

Diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in 2024, Valentine took time off for treatment and briefly returned to the airwaves before retiring in February 2026.

His family stated that he remained calm and dignified throughout his illness and was grateful to have the option of voluntary assisted dying.

ABC Managing Director Hugh Marks described Valentine as a "trusted companion for generations of our Sydney audience" who brought "warmth, wit and humanity to radio." Tributes from colleagues and public figures highlighted his impact on Australian radio audiences.

ABC presenter Robbie Buck called him "joyous, irrepressible and unbelievably sharp," while former ABC colleague Richard Glover said Valentine had "lifted the spirit of the city every day for 25 years." Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese remarked that Valentine was "someone who was always worth listening to." Australia's Governor-General Sam Mostyn noted that Valentine had recently been awarded a Member of the Order (AM) for his contributions to broadcasting, music, and arts advocacy.

The award was presented to his wife and children shortly before his death.
