ICC confirms crimes against humanity trial of ex-Philippine leader Duterte

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has confirmed charges of crimes against humanity against former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, committing him to trial over his controversial anti-drugs crackdown.

ICC judges ruled there are substantial grounds to believe Duterte was responsible for widespread and systematic attacks that led to thousands of deaths during his presidency and earlier tenure as mayor of Davao.

The charges include murder and attempted murder related to the so-called "war on drugs" campaign launched under Duterte's leadership from 2016 to 2022.

Prosecutors allege Duterte created, funded, and armed death squads to target suspected narcotics dealers and users.

Duterte, who was arrested in Manila last year and transferred to The Hague, denies all charges.

His defense team argues he is unfit to stand trial due to cognitive decline and disputes the court's jurisdiction.

The trial date has not yet been set.

This development marks a significant moment in international justice, as it is rare for a former head of state to be formally committed to trial by the ICC on such serious allegations.

Human rights groups have welcomed the decision, viewing it as a step toward accountability for alleged extrajudicial killings.

The ICC judges found evidence indicating a common plan between Duterte and co-perpetrators to kill alleged criminals, including those associated with drug offenses.

The prosecution maintains Duterte exercised ultimate authority over the violent campaigns both as mayor and president.

Estimates of the death toll during Duterte's presidency vary widely, with official police figures citing around 6,000 deaths, while some human rights organizations estimate up to 30,000.
