Surrey Police Close Epsom Rape Investigation After Finding No Offence

Surrey Police have closed their investigation into an alleged rape outside a church in Epsom after concluding that no sexual offence occurred.

The inquiry began following a report on 11 April from a woman in her 20s who claimed she had been raped near Epsom Methodist Church after leaving a local nightclub.

After a thorough investigation, police determined that the woman sustained an accidental head injury and made a confused report.

The force stated it is confident that no offence took place and that there are no suspects.

The initial report had sparked public anger and protests in Epsom, with demonstrators demanding descriptions of suspects.

The protests escalated into disorder, with police officers targeted by thrown eggs and beer cans.

This closure is significant as it addresses community concerns and misinformation that had contributed to unrest in the town.

Surrey Police emphasised their commitment to treating all reports of sexual offences seriously and with sensitivity.

During the investigation, detectives conducted extensive inquiries including reviewing CCTV footage, house-to-house interviews, witness statements, and forensic testing.

The police acknowledged that limited information was available initially, which contributed to public concern.

Surrey Police and Crime Commissioner Lisa Townsend condemned the disorder as "shameful" and noted that some individuals involved in the unrest had travelled from outside the area.

She urged those causing trouble to stay away.
