20,000 teddy bears displayed in Washington to highlight abducted Ukrainian children

A public installation of 20,000 teddy bears was displayed on the National Mall near the US Capitol in Washington, D.C., symbolizing the number of Ukrainian children abducted or forcibly transferred to Russia since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

The event was organised by Razom for Ukraine and the American Coalition for Ukraine.

The teddy bears were attached to a fence to represent the scale of the issue, with Ukrainian authorities and United Nations estimates confirming more than 19,000 minors affected.

The installation aimed to raise awareness and call for stronger international action, including sanctions and efforts to secure the children's return.

Lawmakers, advocates, and Ukraine's ambassador to the United States, Oksana Markarova, attended the event.

They emphasised the ongoing impact of the war on civilians, particularly children separated from their families in occupied areas.

Some children have reportedly been subjected to forced assimilation.

Since 2023, more than 2,100 children have been returned to Ukraine through a national initiative led by Ukrainian ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets.

However, many children remain in Russia or occupied territories, facing legal and logistical barriers to their return.
