Armenia commemorates 111th anniversary of Armenian genocide

Thousands gathered in Yerevan on April 23 for a torchlit procession and memorial events marking the 111th anniversary of the Armenian genocide.

The main event included a march from Republic Square to the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial, where participants laid flowers at the eternal flame.

The commemoration paid tribute to an estimated 1.5 million Armenians killed in 1915 under the Ottoman Empire.

The event remains central to Armenian national identity and continues to influence relations with Turkey.

During the procession, some participants burned Turkish and Azerbaijani flags in protest against denial of the genocide and recent tensions.

The silent march was led by the youth wing of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation.

The demonstrations also expressed frustration over relations with Azerbaijan following the 2023 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and Ankara's support for Baku.

Despite tentative steps towards normalising ties between Armenia and Turkey since 2022, including direct flights and trade talks, progress remains fragile.

Parallel commemorations took place across the Armenian diaspora, notably in London, Paris, and Los Angeles.
