US Defense Secretary Warns Iran Ahead of Peace Talks in Pakistan

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth issued a warning to Iran to "make a good, wise deal" ahead of a potential second round of peace talks scheduled to resume in Pakistan.
Speaking at the Pentagon, Hegseth emphasized that the US is not in a hurry to reach an agreement, stating, "We have all the time in the world." Hegseth confirmed that the US naval blockade of Iranian shipping will continue "as long as it takes" to achieve Washington's objectives aimed at ending what it describes as Tehran's threat to global security.
The blockade has so far intercepted 34 ships, although some Iranian oil shipments have reportedly still moved through the Persian Gulf region.
The ongoing blockade and Iran's maneuvers to choke off the Strait of Hormuz have disrupted global energy supplies, particularly affecting Europe, and have contributed to rising energy prices worldwide.
Hegseth also criticized European allies for not contributing their own forces to secure the Strait of Hormuz, accusing them of "freeriding" on US efforts.
The peace talks are expected to take place in Islamabad, where Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is due to arrive.
Pakistan has increased security measures around the anticipated negotiation venue, including checkpoints and road closures in the city's red zone.
Pakistan is acting as the lead mediator in efforts to resolve the ongoing Iran conflict.
The US blockade and diplomatic efforts come amid heightened tensions following the Iran war that began in late February.
