Leaked Pentagon Memo Proposes Suspending Spain from NATO and Questions UK Falklands Sovereignty

A leaked internal Pentagon email has proposed suspending Spain from the NATO military alliance and reconsidering US support for the United Kingdom's claim to the Falkland Islands.

The memo reflects frustration within the US administration over some NATO allies' refusal to grant basing and overflight rights for US military operations in the ongoing US-Israeli war on Iran.

The email, prepared by Pentagon policy adviser Elbridge Colby, outlines options to punish NATO members, including Spain, for their reluctance or refusal to support American military efforts.

Spain and the UK have both denied US forces access to their territories for the conflict, with Spain refusing use of its bases and airspace, and the UK withholding support related to the Falkland Islands.

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez declined to comment directly on the leaked memo during a European Union summit in Cyprus, emphasizing that Spain cooperates with allies within the framework of international law.

He reiterated Spain's position of absolute collaboration with allies but stressed adherence to legality.

The UK government reaffirmed that the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands remains with the UK and that the islands' right to self-determination is paramount.

The territory is a self-governing British Overseas Territory, having voted overwhelmingly in a 2013 referendum to remain under British rule.

The leaked memo has sparked diplomatic unease amid ongoing tensions within NATO.
