EU anti-fraud office launches formal investigation into Lord Peter Mandelson

The European Anti-Fraud Office (Olaf) has formally launched an investigation into Lord Peter Mandelson over alleged misconduct during his tenure as European trade commissioner from 2004 to 2008.

The investigation was initiated following a request from the European Commission two months ago, with Olaf confirming it had obtained sufficient information to proceed.

It remains unclear whether the allegations involve fraud.

The inquiry will focus on Mandelson's communications with Jeffrey Epstein, including emails from the period surrounding the 2010 eurozone crisis.

Among the allegations is that Mandelson provided Epstein with advance notice of a €500 billion EU bailout plan.

Lord Mandelson has denied any criminal wrongdoing or financial motivation related to the allegations.

Olaf has stated it lacks prosecutorial powers and would refer any criminal findings to the European Prosecutor's Office.

This investigation is notable given Mandelson's influential roles, including his later position as UK business secretary until 2010, and the timing of the alleged communications during a critical financial period for the EU.

Olaf plans to analyse relevant documents and conduct IT forensic examinations, although the availability of materials from over a decade ago may be limited.
