Fire Contained on Ship Carrying Scrap Metal at Newport Docks

A fire broke out early Sunday morning on the vessel Nord Houston, which was docked at Newport Docks carrying 1,000 tonnes of scrap metal.

Fire crews were called to the scene at about 05:40 BST to tackle the blaze.

The South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) confirmed that the fire has been contained.

Multiple fire appliances from local stations remained on site into the afternoon to prevent any reignition.

Officials reported no risk to the public and said operations were being safely scaled back.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.

Authorities are working closely with Associated British Ports, harbour authorities, Natural Resources Wales, the police, and Newport council to assess any potential environmental impact from the incident.

This incident is significant as it involves a large quantity of scrap metal and the potential for environmental harm in a busy port area.

The coordinated response highlights the importance of multi-agency cooperation in managing such emergencies.
