Series of wildfires across Scotland amid extreme alert

A series of wildfires broke out across Scotland over the weekend, prompting an 'extreme' wildfire warning in parts of the country.

Fires were reported at Loch Lomond, the Isle of Skye, and near Lochinver in the Highlands on Saturday afternoon.

In Aberdeenshire, a fire on Ugie Beach in Peterhead is being treated as deliberate by police, with inquiries ongoing.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) confirmed that an 'extreme' wildfire warning for Western Scotland and a 'very high' warning for central and eastern areas remained in place until midnight.

No injuries have been reported from any of the incidents.

Fire crews worked for hours to extinguish the blazes, including a nine-hour effort at Tarbet near Loch Lomond and a five-mile blaze near Lochinver.

On the Isle of Skye, a small grass fire was put out within two hours.

These incidents come amid a period of serious and escalating wildfire risk in Scotland.

The SFRS has urged the public to exercise extreme caution, avoid lighting outdoor fires, and report any large outdoor fires immediately.
