King Charles and Queen Camilla have commenced a four-day state visit to the United States, aiming to renew and strengthen UK-US relations despite recent political tensions and security concerns.

The royal couple arrived in Washington DC on Monday and were greeted at the White House by President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.

British and US flags were prominently displayed around the White House in anticipation of the visit.

The visit includes ceremonial events in Washington, New York, and Virginia, with a symbolic show of solidarity at the 9/11 Memorial.

It is intended as a charm offensive by the UK to emphasise shared history, sacrifice, and values.

Security measures have been heightened following a shooting incident in Washington DC over the weekend at an event attended by President Trump.

The UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, spoke with President Trump to discuss the situation, and it was agreed the visit would proceed with some modifications to minimise risks.

King Charles and Queen Camilla privately extended their sympathies to the Trump family after the shooting.

The UK ambassador to the US, Sir Christian Turner, described the visit as an effort to "renew and revitalise a unique friendship" between the two nations.
