Pakistani attacks on Afghan Kunar University kill and injure dozens

Pakistani attacks on the east Afghan province of Kunar have killed at least seven people and injured 75, including students and a professor at Kunar University, multiple sources have confirmed.

The Taliban government reported that 30 of the injured were university students.

The attacks involved mortars, rockets, and reportedly jets and drones, according to various sources.

The university buildings and surrounding areas suffered extensive damage, as stated by Afghanistan's higher education ministry.

Pakistan's information ministry denied responsibility for the attacks on the university and residential areas, calling the reports fake.

This incident follows a Pakistani airstrike on a drug rehabilitation centre in Kabul weeks earlier, which the UN reported killed 269 people.

The attacks are significant as they occurred shortly after a fragile ceasefire had been established following Chinese-mediated talks between Pakistan and Afghanistan in early April.

The ceasefire had largely held until this incident.

The Taliban government's deputy spokesman, Hamdullah Fitrat, condemned the strikes as "grave and inexcusable war crimes, a blatant act of brutality, and a provocative action." Cross-border fighting between Pakistan and Afghanistan has resulted in hundreds of casualties in recent months.
