Train Collision Near Jakarta Kills at Least Four and Injures Dozens

Two trains collided outside the Indonesian capital Jakarta on Monday, resulting in at least four deaths and injuring dozens of people.
The collision involved a stationary commuter train being hit from behind by a long-distance train on the same track near Bekasi Timur Station, approximately 25 kilometres from Jakarta.
State-owned railway operator KAI confirmed four fatalities and said 38 people had been hospitalised.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, with some passengers still trapped inside the wreckage.
Jakarta Police Chief Insp Gen Asep Edi Suheri reported that six or seven people remain trapped in the carriages.
The Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, who visited the site, indicated the death toll could rise as rescue efforts continue.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes, with some passengers screaming hysterically during the collision.
Footage from local media showed passengers on medical trolleys near Bekasi Timur Station and rescuers working to free trapped individuals.
This incident highlights ongoing safety challenges faced by Indonesia's public transport network, which has a high accident rate attributed to ageing infrastructure and poor maintenance.
