Islamic State claims deadly attack killing 29 in Nigeria's Adamawa state

Gunmen linked to the Islamic State group attacked a village in Nigeria's north-eastern Adamawa state, killing at least 29 people.

The militants raided a football pitch where people had gathered, opening fire indiscriminately before burning homes, places of worship, and motorcycles.

The attack took place in Guyaku, a village in the Gombi local government area, and lasted several hours.

State governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri visited the scene and described the attack as an "affront to our humanity." His media office reported that the atmosphere in the community remains tense, with grief and fear evident among residents.

Many families have fled their homes fearing further attacks.

Governor Fintiri announced that security operations would be intensified immediately to restore peace and ensure residents feel safe in their homes again.

The region bordering Cameroon has experienced repeated attacks by local criminal gangs and Islamic State affiliates in recent years.

This attack comes amid ongoing efforts by Nigerian authorities to curb insecurity ahead of the country's general elections scheduled for January.

Earlier this month, nearly 400 people were sentenced in mass trials for links to militant Islamist groups Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province.
