Man pleads guilty to plotting Islamic State attack on Taylor Swift concert in Vienna

A 21-year-old Austrian man has pleaded guilty to planning a terrorist attack on Taylor Swift's 2024 concert in Vienna and other attacks abroad in the name of the Islamic State group.
The defendant, known as Beran A under Austrian privacy laws, admitted to charges related to terrorist offences and membership in a terrorist organisation during his trial in April 2026.
Authorities cancelled three of Swift's scheduled concerts in Vienna in August 2024 after uncovering the plot, disrupting the event and disappointing fans who had travelled internationally to attend.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about terrorism threats in Europe, particularly those linked to the Islamic State, and the risks posed to public safety at large cultural gatherings.
Beran A was arrested in August 2024 and has been in detention since.
Prosecutors stated he was a member of a terror organisation from May 2023 and actively planned and prepared the attack on the concert.
He allegedly sought weapons and worked on constructing a shrapnel bomb designed for Islamic State-style attacks, receiving instructions from other IS members on handling explosives.
In addition to the Vienna concert plot, Beran A and two other men are accused of planning attacks abroad, including in Dubai and Istanbul, though these attacks did not materialise.
The trial also involves another 21-year-old defendant, Arda K, and a third Austrian, Hasan E, who is imprisoned in Saudi Arabia.
Together, they are accused of forming a highly dangerous IS terror cell.
The cancellation of the concerts and the ongoing trial underscore the vigilance of Austrian security services in preventing attacks on civilian targets.
It remains unclear what sentences the defendants may face as the trial continues and what further details may emerge regarding the broader network and planned attacks.
