Wildfires continue to burn in mid-Wales beauty spots

Firefighters have been battling wildfires in the Elan Valley area of Powys, mid-Wales, since Sunday.

The Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service has deployed a helicopter to drop water on high-risk areas as the fires continue to spread.

The National Trust Cymru has closed the Hafod Estate to the public as a precautionary measure.

Fire crews are actively responding to fires near Claerwen Reservoir and Teifi Pools and have urged the public to avoid visiting these areas.

Local shepherd Glyndwr Jones described the situation as "quite frightening," expressing concern for local farms and livestock, especially lambs that have been on the hills throughout the winter.

The affected area spans approximately 70 square miles, encompassing rugged landscapes and four historic dams built over 120 years ago.

Natural Resources Wales has noted that the current dry weather has significantly increased the fire risk, with no significant rainfall expected until Friday.

Residents in the area have been advised to keep windows and doors closed if smoke becomes thick.

The fires threaten both the natural environment and local agriculture, with uncertainty remaining over the financial impact on farms.
