Israeli Military Intercepts Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla Aid Boats Near Crete

Israeli naval forces have intercepted and seized control of multiple aid vessels belonging to the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters near the Greek island of Crete.

The flotilla was en route to Gaza, more than 1,000 kilometers from Israeli shores.

According to flotilla organizers, Israeli military speedboats approached the vessels, identifying themselves as Israeli forces.

They reportedly pointed lasers and semi-automatic assault weapons at participants, ordering them to the front of the boats and to get on their hands and knees.

Communications on the flotilla vessels were jammed, prompting the flotilla to issue an SOS signal.

Israeli sources confirmed that seven of the 58 vessels in the flotilla were captured near Crete.

The flotilla's press officer described the boarding as an illegal detention and kidnapping, emphasizing that Israel has no jurisdiction in these international waters.

The spokesperson called the Israeli actions a direct attack on unarmed civilian boats.

This incident is significant as it highlights ongoing tensions surrounding the blockade of Gaza.

The Global Sumud Flotilla aims to break this blockade by delivering humanitarian aid, but Israel maintains strict control over maritime access to Gaza.

Israeli military warnings to the flotilla had demanded an immediate return, threatening interception and obstruction by all possible means if the vessels continued their journey.

The flotilla's spokesperson urged all governments to act to protect the more than 400 civilians aboard the vessels and to uphold international law.
