US Charges Sinaloa Governor and Officials with Drug Trafficking

The United States Department of Justice has indicted Rubén Rocha Moya, the sitting governor of Mexico's Sinaloa state, along with nine other current and former officials, on charges related to drug trafficking and other crimes.
The indictment alleges that these officials conspired with the Sinaloa Cartel to facilitate the importation of large quantities of narcotics into the United States.
The charges include conspiracy to import narcotics, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and kidnapping.
The indictment claims that Rocha Moya was elected in 2021 with the cartel's assistance, which allegedly involved intimidation and kidnapping of political rivals to secure protection for cartel operations once in power.
If convicted, Rocha Moya faces a potential life sentence or a mandatory minimum of 40 years in prison.
The indictment also names other officials, including a high-ranking police officer, a senator, and a mayor, accused of similar involvement with the cartel.
This development is significant as it implicates a sitting governor from the ruling Morena party, posing a political challenge for Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum amid ongoing efforts to combat organized crime and corruption.
Rocha Moya has publicly denied the allegations, describing them as baseless and a violation of Mexico's sovereignty.
He stated on social media that the charges are part of a strategy to undermine the constitutional order and vowed to prove the accusations unfounded.
The Mexican Foreign Ministry responded by stating that the extradition requests from the US lacked sufficient evidence, emphasizing that the Attorney General's office will determine whether to detain those charged.
President Sheinbaum has not yet commented on the indictment.
US Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson highlighted the shared priority of combating transnational crime between the two countries, emphasizing commitments to transparency, anti-corruption enforcement, and upholding the rule of law.
