Man arrested after assault on French nun in East Jerusalem

A man has been arrested following an assault on a French nun in Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem.

The incident occurred earlier this week when the nun was shoved to the ground and kicked.

Video footage shows the woman in a grey habit being pushed from behind, causing her to hit her head on a stone block.

The attacker, wearing a Jewish kippah and ritual tassels, initially walked away but returned to kick her while she was on the ground.

The 36-year-old suspect was arrested on suspicion of a racially motivated assault.

Israeli police released footage of the arrest and stated they have a zero-tolerance policy towards violence against clergy and religious communities.

The nun, a researcher at the French Biblical and Archaeological School, was described by Father Olivier Poquillon as the victim of an unprovoked attack.

The French Consulate in Jerusalem condemned the aggression, and Israel's Foreign Ministry emphasized the country's commitment to religious freedom and coexistence.

This assault is part of a recent increase in harassment of Christian clergy and pilgrims by Jewish extremists in Jerusalem's Old City.
