Two killed in suspected deliberate vehicle ramming in Leipzig shopping area

Two people have been killed and three others critically injured after a driver ploughed into a busy shopping area in the centre of Leipzig, in eastern Germany.

Police say the incident happened on Monday afternoon and are treating it as a suspected deliberate ramming.

Authorities say the driver was a 33-year-old German citizen born in the Leipzig area.

He was detained inside the vehicle and remains in police custody for questioning.

Police said the man drove from Augustusplatz along Grimmaische Strasse into the city's central pedestrianised shopping area.

Saxony's interior minister, Armin Schuster, said investigators believe the suspect acted alone, while police chief RenΓ© Demmler said there was no longer any danger.

The case is being investigated on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

Officials also said an unspecified number of people suffered less serious injuries.

The incident has drawn attention because it happened in a crowded city-centre area and left multiple people seriously hurt.
