South African police recover human remains from crocodile after flood disappearance
South African police have recovered human remains from a crocodile during a search operation in the Komati River area after a businessman was swept away by floodwater.
Captain Johan Potgieter said he was lowered from a helicopter into the river to reach the animal, which was on an island and could not be approached safely by boat.
He said the crocodile had been shot before the recovery operation, and remains were later found inside the 4.5m-long animal.
DNA tests are now under way to confirm the identity of the remains.
Police said the man's car became stranded while trying to cross a low bridge in flood conditions last week, and by the time officers reached the scene it was empty.
The search involved drones and helicopters, with officers eventually locating a small island where several crocodiles were lying in the sun.
Police said the presence of other crocodiles, hippos and rocks made the area too dangerous for a water-based recovery.
The operation has drawn attention because of the risks involved and the unusual method used to retrieve the remains.
South Africa's acting police chief has praised Potgieter's bravery, describing the mission as highly dangerous and complex.
