Russia warns diplomats to leave Kyiv over possible retaliatory strike

Russia has warned foreign diplomatic missions in Kyiv to evacuate staff ahead of Moscow's Victory Day commemorations, saying it could carry out a retaliatory strike if Ukraine disrupts the events.

In a note to embassies and international organisations, Moscow urged them to ensure the timely evacuation of personnel from the Ukrainian capital, as well as citizens, if needed.

It said any disruption to the May 9 parade and related commemorations in Red Square could trigger a strike on Kyiv, including against what it called decision-making centres.

The warning comes as Russia has declared a unilateral ceasefire for May 8-9 to coincide with the anniversary, while Ukraine has criticised Moscow's demands.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said Russia was afraid Ukrainian drones would appear over Red Square.

The threat has immediate implications for foreign missions still operating in Kyiv and adds to tensions around a period already marked by competing ceasefire claims and accusations of violations.

Russia marks World War II Victory Day each year with a military parade in Red Square, and the Kremlin has linked this year's commemorations to security concerns.

Ukraine proposed its own ceasefire for May 6, which Russia ignored.

Ukrainian officials said multiple attacks continued on Wednesday, when Ukraine's unilateral ceasefire was due to be in force.
