Indonesia bus and fuel tanker crash kills at least 16 on Sumatra highway
A passenger bus and a fuel tanker truck have collided head-on on Indonesia's Sumatra island, killing at least 16 people and injuring four others, officials said.
The crash happened on the Trans-Sumatra Highway in North Musi Rawas regency, South Sumatra province, when the intercity bus struck the tanker travelling in the opposite direction.
The bus was carrying at least 20 people and was travelling from Lubuklinggau to Jambi.
Officials said the impact triggered a fire that engulfed both vehicles, leaving many victims trapped inside.
Four bus passengers survived and were taken to a nearby health clinic, including three with severe burns and one with minor injuries.
The dead include the bus driver and 13 passengers, as well as the tanker's driver and assistant.
Rescuers and traffic police were involved in evacuating victims and clearing the wreckage, while the blaze disrupted traffic along the highway.
The incident is the latest serious transport accident in Indonesia, where road crashes remain a recurring safety concern.
The scale of the fire and the number of people trapped inside have made the crash particularly severe.
