Queensland education software breach affects tens of thousands of students
Tens of thousands of Queensland students and teachers have been affected by a data breach linked to the Canvas learning management system used by state schools.
Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek said early advice suggested names, school locations and email addresses were likely exposed.
The state government said the breach may have affected students and staff studying or working at Queensland schools since 2020.
It said school principals were contacting families and teachers about the incident.
Mr Langbroek said there was no evidence that passwords, dates of birth or financial information had been accessed.
He also said the department was providing priority support to families known to child safety authorities and to those with a known history of domestic and family violence.
The breach matters because the affected platform is used across Queensland schools and the number of people involved is large.
The minister said early advice suggested more than 200 million people could be impacted worldwide across more than 9,000 schools, universities and other institutions.
The incident follows a separate notification from TasTAFE, which said some of its students had been compromised after a cybersecurity attack on the same learning management system.
