New York judge unseals purported Epstein suicide note
A federal judge in New York has unsealed a document described as a purported suicide note attributed to Jeffrey Epstein.
The release came after a request from The New York Times and relates to Nicholas Tartaglione's criminal case.
US District Judge Kenneth Karas said he was not ruling on whether the note was authentic.
He said only that it qualified as a judicial document and did not need to remain sealed.
The handwritten note was said to have been found by Tartaglione, Epstein's former jail cellmate, after an earlier apparent attempt by Epstein to take his own life.
The document was submitted by lawyers for Tartaglione, who is serving four consecutive life sentences for drug-related murders.
The unsealing adds a new public record to the long-running scrutiny of Epstein's final months in custody.
Epstein, a convicted sex offender and accused sex trafficker, was found dead in his Manhattan jail cell in August 2019 in what was ruled a suicide.
Judge Karas said no party had identified any competing reason to keep the note sealed.
