Inmate dies after stabbing at Wellington Correctional Facility in western NSW

A 25-year-old inmate has died after an alleged stabbing at Wellington Correctional Facility in western New South Wales.

Police say a 26-year-old inmate has been charged with murder and wounding over the incident.

Officers were called to the mixed-security centre on Goolma Road at about 3:30pm on Wednesday after reports of a stabbing.

The 25-year-old man was taken to Orange Hospital in a critical condition and died on Thursday morning.

Police said a crime scene was established at the facility and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

The accused has been refused bail and is due to appear before Dubbo Local Court in July.

The case is significant because it involves a fatal assault inside a correctional facility and has triggered a homicide investigation.

It also raises immediate questions about safety and supervision within the prison system, although no further findings have been released.

Wellington Correctional Facility is about 45km outside Dubbo and can accommodate about 600 inmates.
