Chad declares mourning after Boko Haram ambush kills two generals
Chad has declared three days of national mourning after a Boko Haram ambush in the Lake Chad Basin killed two generals on Wednesday.
The government said the mourning period will run from midnight on 6 May to midnight on 9 May.
The attack took place in the volatile Lake Chad Basin, a remote area of marshes and islands shared by Chad, Nigeria, Cameroon and Niger.
The government said the mourning was in memory of those killed in attacks by armed groups on 4 and 6 May.
The ambush followed a separate assault two days earlier on the Barka Tolorom military base near Lake Chad, where at least 24 soldiers were killed.
The army said a significant number of attackers were also killed in that incident.
The killings underline the continuing threat posed by Boko Haram and its splinter factions in the region.
The Lake Chad Basin has seen renewed attacks on security forces in recent months, including kidnappings and assaults.
Chad has previously faced deadly attacks in the same area.
