Iran accused of near-daily prisoner executions in secrecy

Rights groups say Iran has carried out a sharp rise in prisoner executions in recent weeks, with at least 24 people reportedly executed since March.

They say six executions were carried out over two days, as families were often left unaware until after the killings.

The Norway-based monitoring group Iran Human Rights said the executions were taking place in secrecy, with some bodies not returned to relatives.

It said families had also faced harassment and pressure not to speak publicly about the deaths.

The reported surge comes amid an internet blackout that has lasted for more than two months, making it harder for people inside Iran to communicate.

Rights groups say that has complicated efforts to verify cases and has increased concern among families of detainees.

The executions are being linked by rights groups to a wider crackdown tied to anti-government protests and to espionage accusations during the war with the US and Israel.

They say hundreds of people may be at risk of the death penalty.

One family member of Saleh Mohammadi, a teenager and national wrestling champion executed in March, said the family had faced repeated harassment and psychological pressure after his death.
