At least five killed in fire at Villahermosa fairground concert in Mexico
At least five people have died after a fire broke out at a crowded fairground concert in Villahermosa, in Mexico's Tabasco state.
Local officials said the blaze erupted in the early hours on Thursday at Tabasco Park.
The fire started in Warehouse 1, according to the governor of Tabasco, Javier May Rodríguez.
He said emergency services brought the flames under control and that an investigation had been launched.
Officials said hundreds of people were at the event when the fire began, and many fled the grounds in panic.
The governor said he was grateful to members of the public who helped evacuate the area.
The incident matters because it struck during a large public gathering, raising questions about safety at the venue and the circumstances that allowed the fire to spread.
Authorities have also said they will support affected exhibitors and businesses.
Footage shared online showed thick smoke and flames rising above the fairground as crowds ran for safety.
Reports said the concert had begun on Wednesday night and continued into the early hours of Thursday.
One report said as many as 135,000 people may have been attending the concert, although that figure has not been independently confirmed in the supplied material.
The confirmed death toll remains at least five.
