Starmer to meet Streeting after Labour leadership revolt
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is due to meet Health Secretary Wes Streeting after a turbulent period in which four ministers resigned and at least 80 MPs reportedly called for him to quit.
Mr Starmer has so far held on to power in 10 Downing Street, with reports suggesting that those seen as possible successors do not yet have the numbers to force an immediate challenge.
The meeting with Mr Streeting is significant because he is viewed as one of the key rivals to Mr Starmer from the right of the Labour Party.
Mr Streeting has been reported as backing away from launching an immediate leadership bid.
The row matters because it has exposed a serious split inside the government while Mr Starmer is trying to present an image of control and continuity.
He told Cabinet the country expected ministers to get on with governing, and he has already replaced four ministers who quit and called for him to stand down.
Among those who resigned were Jess Phillips and health minister Zubir Ahmed, an ally of Mr Streeting.
Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy has publicly backed Mr Starmer and urged colleagues to step back and take a breath.
Other possible challengers have also been discussed.
