Ebola outbreak declared in eastern DR Congo after 65 deaths and Uganda case
A new Ebola outbreak has been declared in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, with health officials saying the outbreak is currently confined to Ituri province in the northeast of the country. The area borders Uganda and South Sudan, raising concern about cross-border spread. Officials have also confirmed one related death in Kampala, Uganda, after a man from the DRC was admitted to hospital earlier in the week.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said there were 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths reported in the DRC. Uganda's health ministry said the man who died in Kampala was 59 years old and had travelled from the DRC. It said the case was imported and that no local case had yet been confirmed in Uganda.
The body was repatriated the same day, according to the ministry. Tests showed the man was infected with the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which no vaccine exists. Vaccines are available only for the Zaire strain, which is the deadliest variant.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it was a large outbreak. The World Health Organization's emergency alert and response director said the region was highly volatile because of the humanitarian situation and cross-border population movements. The outbreak matters because Ituri sits in a part of eastern DRC where insecurity and movement across borders can make containment harder.
The province's main city, Bunia, is a crowded urban centre, and a resident there said an epidemic would be very serious in the current conditions. The DRC has dealt with Ebola outbreaks before, but officials and health agencies are warning that the combination of conflict, displacement and mobility could increase the risk of wider transmission. The DRC government had not yet commented publicly on the outbreak in the latest reports.
That leaves open questions about the scale of the response inside the country, including contact tracing, isolation and treatment capacity. The confirmation of a related death in Uganda also shows how quickly infections can cross borders before they are detected. Health authorities are likely to be watching whether any further cases appear in Uganda or in neighbouring areas of eastern DRC.
What remains unclear is how many of the suspected cases have been laboratory confirmed and whether the outbreak is linked to any earlier transmission chain. It is also not yet clear how far the virus may already have spread within Ituri province. The next developments to watch are official case updates from DRC and Uganda, as well as any announcements on containment measures and international support.
